Publishing Thematic Poetry

What follows is an offer to join an interactive publishing of poetry by students in grades K-5 and 6-8. It is being placed on a Department of Defense school internet server in the Republic of Panama. The posting of poetry and the running of the site will be done by 5th grade students with a little help every once and a while by an adult. (That's me!) The spelling, punctuating and other such stuff will fall under the guidance of a true expert in language and literature. She is a profesora at the Escuela Inernacional de Panama. ,,,,she is also my wife. (:-)

OVERVIEW:

Do you love poetry? Do you want to give your students a chance to have their work published and then appreciated by a global audience? Do you want to be able to share your students' work with parents and grandparents in time for the holidays?

PROJECT:

Sharing Poetry

PURPOSE:

As a result of participating in this project, students will gain an appreciation for thematic poetry from a variety of areas around the globe. Students will gain confidence and pride in their work as they publish for a global audience via the Internet. Students and teachers will also have an exposure to simple html programming and sending files via the internet.

DATES:

We will do at least two cycles of poems. (Maybe more if it goes well.) The first will be due in by the 13th of December. The second one will be due in by the 24th of January. All poems will be submitted by email.

SUBJECTS:

Social Studies, Language Arts, and Geography

GRADE LEVELS:

Grades K - 5 and 6 - 8

SUMMARY:

Topics: The topics will be as follows:

  1. December 13th: Holidays
  2. January 24th: Seasons

Organization:

Teachers will submit the materials in the following manner :

  1. After students complete their poems, the teacher will ensure that the poems are typed into the template using a simple "text" editor.
  2. Teachers may download both an "index" template and a "student" template at
  3. The teacher will then ensure that each student's work is placed in his/her own file. The names of the files will be: stu1.htm, stu2.htm, stu3.htm, etc.
  4. The teacher will then use the "index" template to organize an index of all of the student's work.
  5. The teacher may want to add art work or adjust the layout of the template.
  6. All of the work including, .jpg's or .gif's will be submitted either by email or FTP.
  7. I will then organize the various classes into a website that is broken down by grade level and school. If poems are in by the 13 th of December, the website should be up by the 16 th. If we get the poems back by the 24th of January, we should have them posted by the 27 th of January.

HOW TO SUBMIT:

Send poems or questions to: bmcgee@pananet.com or you may FTP them directly to the website. People using FTP please email me for specific directions for placement of the files.

RESPONSES POSTED:

If all teachers submit their material in the format specific, we should be able to have the website published within 2-3 days after final submission.

Thank you in advance for your participation.
